Desultory is an adjective that is used to describe not having a plan or purpose. Something which is done without serious effort. Random. Lacking in consistency.

Examples:

  1. He had a ‘desultory’ attitude towards life.
  2. You could tell he was ‘desultory’ by nature as he was undertaking several unrelated projects at one given time.
  3. She had a ‘desultory’ conversation with the people at work, but somehow it sparked an idea in her head which allowed her to take a new direction in her life.
